The process of creating and organising spaces typically involves the presentation of 2D drawings and 3D perspectives, illustrating the environment to be built and allowing Clients to visualise their day-to-day activities within the spaces being designed.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF ARCHITECTURE

PRELIMINARY BRIEF
This phase involves gathering the project brief and surveying the conditions and constraints to which the architectural design must respond.
PRELIMINARY STUDY
The preliminary study is the first phase in which the architectural project is formalised through graphic elements, developed on the basis of the preliminary brief.
At this stage, design solutions are explored and tested, producing 2D and/or 3D graphic elements such as floor plans, sections, elevations, diagrams, and three-dimensional visualisations.
CONCEPT DESIGN / BASE PROJECT
This phase covers the development of the prior control procedure — whether planning permission or prior notification — rigorously addressing all regulatory requirements and the documentation required for subsequent approval. This is followed by the submission of Specialist Engineering Projects, which in the case of full planning permission may be submitted at a later stage.
The architectural project comprises various elements, including descriptive and justification reports, accessibility plans, location plans and extracts from land-use and constraint maps, topographic surveys, construction schedules, cost estimates, statistical forms for INE, liability declarations, and other supporting documents.
Upon submission of this phase, the project can be lodged with the relevant Municipal Council and any other licensing authorities whose approval is required for the urban operation to proceed.
CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
The construction documentation phase formalises all documents required for building works. These documents serve as the on-site guide, detailing construction methods, material specifications, and quantities.
The architectural project is defined in full detail at this stage — covering the specific requirements and distinctive features that make each project unique, as well as its coordination with structural and building services infrastructure.
CONTRACTOR SELECTION SUPPORT
Support in selecting a contractor to formalise a construction contract and oversee the execution of the works, based on the review and comparison of preliminary quotes.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND SITE SUPERVISION
Technical assistance to the project includes site supervision — periodic site visits to ensure the architectural project is being correctly executed on site. Clarifications are provided during site visits and meetings, or via phone and video call, to resolve any queries arising from the architectural solution.
Site meetings with the main contractor, subcontractors, and executing parties are essential to ensure the project and its overall strategy are achieved without compromising the requirements of each specialist discipline, and to confirm overall coordination.
AS-BUILT DRAWINGS
As-built drawings are the graphic record of what was actually constructed on site, reflecting any changes — where applicable — made to the previously approved project that gave rise to the issuance of the building permit.

ENGINEERING PROJECT METHODOLOGY
Engineering projects are developed once the architectural design has reached a stage of conceptual and spatial stability. The architectural project phases progress through a gradual process of increasing detail and the maturation of ideas, which at a certain point requires the essential contribution of the various specialist disciplines.
The specialist disciplines are integrated into the architecture in a symbiotic way, enabling correct coordination between the different projects and allowing adjustments to be made while the design is still in development — before it is finalised — avoiding clashes and amendments to the architectural project during the construction phase. Coordination between the specialist disciplines and the base architectural project makes the overall process more efficient and reduces risk for the Client.
At spacelovers, the process is carefully developed and coordinated to grow in a structured and sustainable way, where the specialist disciplines complement the whole rather than being added on to the construction as an afterthought. The specialist engineering projects to be produced — which vary according to the nature and characteristics of the construction — are an integral part of a collaborative design practice strategy.

We are working with spacelovers to renovate parts of a newly purchased apartment in Lisbon and have had a terrific experience so far. Rui Rabaca has been a joy to work with on the design. He has been so helpful, flexible and accommodating to our preferences, as well as providing invaluable explanation and support for us as non-Portuguese speakers who are new to Lisbon.
