THE ROLE OF THE PROJECT COORDINATOR
Under Law No. 31/2009 of 3 July, as amended by Law No. 40/2015 of 1 June, the Project Coordinator plays a fundamental role in ensuring the quality, consistency, and regulatory compliance of construction projects.
The Project Coordinator is responsible for managing the integration of the architectural design and all engineering disciplines, ensuring that every project is technically compatible, coordinated, and developed in accordance with the applicable legislation, technical standards, and the client's objectives.
For projects subject to the Portuguese Legal Framework for Urban Development and Building (RJUE)—including Building Permit Applications, Prior Communication procedures, Prior Information Requests (PIP), and, where applicable, certain works exempt from prior planning control—the appointment of a Project Coordinator is a key element in achieving a fully coordinated and technically robust design.
By coordinating the work of architects, engineers, and specialist consultants throughout the design process, the Project Coordinator identifies potential conflicts before construction begins, reducing project risks, preventing costly site changes, improving buildability, and ensuring that all disciplines work together as a single, integrated project.
RESPONSABILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE PROJECT COORDINATOR
The Project Coordinator plays a central role in ensuring that all design disciplines are fully integrated and that the project is delivered in accordance with the client's objectives, statutory requirements, and recognised engineering and architectural standards.

The Project Coordinator is responsible for:
Ensuring the full coordination and compatibility of the architectural design with all engineering and specialist disciplines.
Verifying compliance with all applicable legislation, technical standards, building regulations, and planning requirements.
Facilitating clear and effective communication between the client, architects, engineers, specialist consultants, and other project stakeholders.
Coordinating the exchange of technical information throughout the design process.
Identifying, assessing, and resolving conflicts or clashes between different project disciplines before construction begins.
Preparing coordination reports and maintaining records that document the design coordination process.
Supporting the successful delivery of a technically consistent, buildable, and fully coordinated project.
Professional Rights
To perform these responsibilities effectively, the Project Coordinator should be entitled to:
Access all technical information, project documentation, and design updates necessary to carry out the coordination role.< Request clarifications, revisions, or additional information from architects, engineers, and specialist consultants whenever inconsistencies or coordination issues are identified. Participate in technical meetings and design reviews throughout the project development process. Receive professional remuneration appropriate to the scale, complexity, and level of responsibility associated with the project coordination services provided.

O projeto de renovação do meu apartamento desenvolvido pela Space Lovers, na pessoa do Arqtª Rui Rabaça e da Arqtª Sofia, foi de excelência. O Arqtº Rui Rabaça que foi o meu interlocutor no desenvolvimento e implementação do projeto demonstrou grandes competências, experiência e muito orientado para as necessidades do cliente. We are working with spacelovers to renovate parts of a newly purchased apartment in Lisbon and have had a terrific experience so far. Rui Rabaca has been a joy to work with on the design.
